With that in mind, today's post gives me great pleasure to write. Recently, we have been distributing and posting handouts around the club about the proper divot pattern to employ when using our practice tee. The pattern illustrated below is entirely about promoting quick recovery of already used areas of the practice tee. Given the size of our range tee, and if everyone does their part, we can have great turf from which to practice from all season long...
I am truly excited to see that Scott Schulte, Assistant Golf Professional, has taken this message to heart and has begun working with our juniors imploring them to lead the way. I think you'll agree the photos below demonstrate the great progress that is being made on this front.
A great thank you is owed to Scott for his efforts and to each of these juniors for taking to the instruction and leading the way. Now we just need to get the Adults to follow suit! I am asking the children to carry this instruction to their friends and family so don't be surprised if the next time you are out practicing with your son or daughter you hear "you're doing it wrong mom or dad".
As a result, we will be running sprinklers throughout the day. It is critical for us to make sure adequate moisture exists in order for the turf to get through the extended period of heat that is now predicted to last until Friday. We will do our best to avoid golfers, but we apologize ahead of time if you encounter sprinklers running during your round today. Stay cool...We'll be trying to do the same for the turf!!!Robert McCurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00929737975170922196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-616990604360336003.post-39634253268148972392013-06-29T17:39:00.001-07:002013-06-29T17:39:31.896-07:00Rory v. Yesterday, Jessie Zeiter, a member of our grounds crew, managed to capture a photo of the beautiful doe. The number of sightings in recent weeks, gives me a strong reason to believe she is now calling our wooded lot "home".

In the 13 years I have been here at CCD, I have never seen a deer on the property. It's exciting to see and further reason to protect our wooded lot...it should be treated as a treasured piece of the CCD property. We look forward to seeing this gift of Mother Nature from time to time and hope all of you are so fortunate as well.

If you are a regular dog walker, please be aware of this situation as your beloved pet many chase after the deer if they come in contact with one another in the woods. I would strongly suggest putting your pet on a leash to avoid any potential problems. I have no intention of doing anything to remove this deer from the property. I just hope she is kind enough to stay off the greens!!!Robert McCurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00929737975170922196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-616990604360336003.post-6376930866865073122013-06-11T05:46:00.000-07:002013-06-11T05:58:24.666-07:00Yellow Spots on Collars???By now most of you have probably seen the yellow "patches" in the collars around our putting greens. Many of you may think this is a disease or unintended. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth.

Pictured above is the Putting Green collar illustrating the "yellow patches". Poa annua has been injured but the surrounding bentgrass remains unaffected. Why so?

The yellowing turf is the result of a very effective application of a selective herbicide known commercially as Velocity. Velocity is a very good at injuring and/or killing Poa annua turfgrass. The yellow spots are the result of a spot spray using a standard 2 gallon pump up sprayer available at any local hardware store. This application method allowed us to deliver an aggressive rate of product specifically to the Poa annua without any risk of injuring the surrounding bentgrass. The results of the application have been impressive to say the least. While visually the turf has been compromised, the playability thus far has not.

The timing of this application was intentional. As we head into the warmer portions of spring and summer, the bentgrass plants will thrive in the summer heat and humidity while the Poa annua will struggle. The goal of this application was to cripple the Poa annua now and allow for the bentgrass to aggressively fill in these areas as the Poa dies back. In the event, the damage becomes too severe, we are already prepared with over 2000sqft of sod to plug and or replace any area that becomes a nuisance.

#9 collar: The bent is thriving and the Poa annua...Not so much!!!

This and further applications will go a long way in preventing the encroachment of Poa annua into our wonderful new greens!!!

Did you know there is a preferred method for taking divots on the range? In order to ensure that we have high quality turf to hit balls from late into the season, we need your help!!! Below are two illustrations that effectively demonstrate how your divot pattern can effect the overall condition of the practice range. In the first image, you see three methods of taking divots: strip, block and shotgun pattern. The "strip" method on the left is far and away the preferred method for encouraging turf conservation and recovery. The block image, while conserving turf, takes an enormous amount of time to recover. The "shotgun" pattern simply disturbs too large an area at one time and chews up the practice range far too quickly.

As can be seen in the second picture below, when done correctly, the "strip" method uses far less overall turf. These strip divots will fill quickly with lateral growth from the sides and an aggressively fertility program used specifically on the practice range to encourage rapid recovery.

PLEASE USE THE "STRIP" METHOD AND ENCOURAGE YOUR FELLOW PLAYERS TO DO THE SAME!!!

There are many tools available commercially that, when used correctly, can do a fine job of repairing the scares. It is however not the type of tool you use, but the method of operation that is critical. Here at CCD we have chosen to distribute the GreenFix tool for use on our greens. The GreenFix tool is classified by what is known as a "restricted" entry tool. After watching the attached video prepared by the USGA, you will understand why that restriction is so important to proper ball mark repair. Are you avoiding the one critical misstep when you are repairing your ball marks?????
We are currently experiencing some operational issues with our pump station and have a technician who will be on site by noon today. We must try to simulate a night's irrigating schedule in order for him to understand what is going wrong and how to isolate the problem.

I apologize in advance for this inconvenience, but you have to grab the technician when you can get them, especially in the spring when everyone is just starting their irrigation systems for the first time and realizing, like us, they have issues that must be addressed.

We expect this process to last for 3-4 days; however, we will not spray on Thursday due to ladies day or over the weekend. With any luck, we can wrap up the application by next Tuesday. The plan is to start the applications in the #9 and #10 area of the course and work our way around the property and finish up at the short course and range area as quickly as possible.

If you are a concerned dog walker, we will be spraying the field on the left side of #9 fairway tomorrow and we will leave the polo field unsprayed for your use. On Monday of next week, we will spray the polo field area so please make alternate plans to walk the pooches if you are concerned about this application.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Last fall we purchased the Graden Swingwing unit represented in the video for use on our fairways and tees. The process of "gradening" a fairway removes a significant amount of organic matter (thatch) from the turf in a process that is faster and less disruptive than traditional core aerification. When the verti-cutting is complete, small lines approximately 2" apart will remain in the fairways for the next 7-10 days while they recover. These lines will have little to no effect on the playability of the course.

The weather will be absolutely perfect the remainder of the week to get this process completed. Please excuse or dust as we work this agronomic practice for the overall health and benefit of your golfing experience.
Last fall, we contracted with a company to come out and laser measure all of our sprinklers within 300 yards of any green complex. We are happy to report as of Friday, all of these new tags have been installed out on the course. A great big "Thank You" to our MSU Intern, Bryan Kiel, for making it happen so quickly. Brian volunteered to work long hours in order to finish the installation prior to the Easton Cup last Saturday and Sunday.
Mother Nature continues to keep the golf course saturated this spring but better news is on the horizon. The 10 day forecast calls for an extended period of warmer weather (mid 60's to near 70) throughout most of the weekend and late into next week. Finally, some good golfing weather is just around the corner!!!Robert McCurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00929737975170922196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-616990604360336003.post-40067594055667617962013-04-16T06:13:00.001-07:002013-04-16T06:13:36.347-07:00New Bluestone Path to First Tee!!!

Many have asked in recent weeks what all the paint around the first tee was for? Below you will find a rendering of the new bluestone path that we broke ground on yesterday. This path along with some added landscaping adjacent the immediate area and all along the path behind the first tee will be a handsome addition to this area.

Yesterday the hardscapes team from Backer Landscaping was on site to carefully excavate the area where the new path is to be placed.

By the end of day, the area was completely prepped, grade stakes and wire mesh were placed in anticipation of the base concrete being poured this morning if Mother Nature cooperates.

Below are two additional renderings to help illustrate what the final look we are striving to achieve in this area is. We hope you all agree this will be a wonderful improvement to the first tee experience!!
The course was still soaked yesterday after the 3" inches of last week and now it's raining "cats and dogs" this morning. We will be unable to run carts at all today and the rest of the week is not looking much brighter. Thanks for your continued understanding and patience.

Each spring, the maintenance crew spends the better part of one entire week preparing the bunkers for play. It takes a small army of about 15 crew members, split into two teams, to accomplish this task. With 73 bunkers (including the 2 at the chipping green) covering approximately 110,000sqft of hazard, it is no small task to get this work done. The crew have been instructed to ensure there is no more, or less, than 2" of sand on the "face" of each bunker and exactly 4" of sand in the bottom of each bunker. We are constantly monitoring these conditions throughout the season and are always making adjustments as issues are discovered or reported.

In the above picture, you can see crew member Martin Perez, who is leading team #1, inspecting the depth of the sand on the left side fairway bunker of hole #14. The measuring device is nothing more than an old golf shaft that as been marked at the 2" and 4" depths mentioned above. Behind Mr. Perez, the remainder of his team diligently works to smooth out the bottom of the bunker surface.

Below is team #2 working in the large bunker left of #9 green/approach. This time crew member Bulmaro Cruz is leading the way and doing the inspections while Salvador Gonzalez is placing new sand where the depth was not correct. In the areas such as this, where it has been determined that sand must be added, the sand will be raked out and re-inspected by Mr. Cruz to ensure the correct depth has been achieved.

As of this morning, the combined efforts of both bunker teams have left us with just a handful of bunkers in the 4, 5, 13, 16 area of the golf course to complete. This work will be completed today and all of the bunkers will be in service for the season.
Additionally, we will open all practice facilities (range, chipper, and putting green) on Thursday in order to allow a little warm up before your first round of the season. For those of you looking to use carts...Good News! Carts will be available on opening day!!!

A couple of things you should know about this years opening:

Due to the cold temps and frozen conditions in the bunkers, many of them will not be groomed prior to opening. The crew is out working today, and will be all week, on the ones we can but many of them are simply unworkable at this time.

While the greens will be mowed prior to opening, many of the other surfaces (tees, fairways and collars) may not be mowed prior to opening unless they begin to grow. We will mow each of these respective areas as soon as they are ready.

Deeptine aeration of the fairways is on-going and will continue daily into the week of April 14th. It's a slow process but extremely important to relieve soil compaction in the fairways. After last years unusually long, dry and warm season, the fairways are more in need then ever of this process.

Course Aerification - The greens and tees are scheduled to be aerified April 15th and 16th. With cooperation from Mother Nature, in about 10 days time the holes should completely heal.

Fairway Graden - This spring we intend to conduct an aggressive verti-cutting procedure known as "gradening". This process is less intrusive than conventional hollow-tine aerification but still extremely effective in removing excessive organic matter (thatch). We expect the process to take one week to complete all the fairways. This work will begin April 17th and will continue daily until complete and as weather allows.

Look forward to seeing everyone back out on the course. Here's to a great 2013 season ahead!
Last week we were able to be outside and start cleaning up the property but this week we have been completely idled due to the snow. We managed to clean up the entire clubhouse area, driving range, and short course before the snow came so we do have a good head start as we await some better weather.

The extended forecast is still not very favorable over the next 7-10 days. With highs barely reaching forty degrees and lows at or below freezing well into next week, it does not look very likely that there will be any golf this March. In these temperatures, the frost in the ground will not come out and until that happens, we simply can't open the golf course. My hope is that our crew can resume the clean up efforts the early part of next week and perhaps finish that component by the end of next week. With any luck, by then the temps will have elevated and we will begin to see the frost come out of the ground and the turf begin to grow. Ideally, we would get a week of good growth before we open so the course can defend itself from divots and ball marks.

We will continue to update you as conditions change. In the meantime, keep hitting balls under the domes in anticipation of a great 2013 golf season!!!
The extended forecast is starting to move in the right direction, but very slowly. Below is graph from Accuweather.com prediciting the weather for the remainder of the month. Pictured below are the benches and ball washers that line our tee boxes during the season. The club has made a significant investment in very high quality materials and we are determined to make sure they get the greatest care possible!!! To maintain all of our wood products in "like-new" condition, we apply a specialized cleaner and scrub every surface of the benches, trash cans, stakes, divot sand boxes and water coolers. After a light power wash and two days of air drying, we are left with a bare wood surface that is ready for a new finish coat. This year we opted to convert the benches to the same color stain as our garbage cans and water coolers. We think the new improved look is fantastic and hope you agree!
Pictured above are two of our finest, Lino Bautista and Martin Perez, applying the new finish coat to a perfectly cleaned bench. These two gentlemen have repeatedly done this process for two months straight and deserve a big round of applause.
Below you see a bench that has been throughly cleaned along side a already finished trash can. The contrast is stunning.

To keep their fresh shine, the ball washers are disassembled and cleaned of any imperfections. A coat of slide polish is applied and they are ready for play.
Even though it may be considered the off season for golf in Michigan, it is anything but for the Greens Department. In addition to handling all of the snow and platform tennis maintenance duties, we must tear down every piece of golf course equipment during the winter months in preparation for the next season.

Pictured above is our Head Mechanic, Nathan Foondle, working on one of our three fairway units. These cutting units(reels) must be completly disassembled, thoroughly cleaned, bearings replaced, greased, reassembled and sharpened for the upcoming season. This fairway unit already has had the reels sharpened and is now ready for a through inspection. The machine is placed in our lift to inspect, and replace where necessary, every hydraulic hose, change filters, and all necessary fluids.

Winter provides our two mechanics with about four and a half months to thoroughly dig into every piece of equipment from the smallest weed whip to our large John Deere tractors. This is an extremely key and time consuming task. With the season just around the corner, about 85-90% of the all the equipment is complete. Just a handful more items to get through before mother nature says it's time to golf. Authored by: Kevin Peck, Assistant Golf Course Superintendent Robert McCurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00929737975170922196noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-616990604360336003.post-19878848464503465792013-02-21T13:48:00.000-08:002013-02-21T13:48:10.035-08:00New Intern Housing Standing by for the 2013 SeasonNew this year is a dorm style house for students that are completing internships for their college degree.

The dorm is capable of housing six students completing a professional internship as a requirement for their degree in higher education. These interns will come with an interest in various areas of private club management: golf course maintenance, inside management, cullinary, tennis, and future golf professionals. The dorm consists of a full kitchen, six bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a common area.

Here in the Greens Department, we are excited to announce that we have our first intern lined up to start in late March. Bryan Kiel is a student from Michigan State University in the Turfgrass Management program. He will be with us for nearly five months getting as much on the job experience as he can. Our goal is to be the "launching pad" for Bryan and hopefully many more like him to follow.

These records, dating to 1896, will show the July heat to be the highest recorded, while also being the third highest in rain precipitation. Obviously, this extreme weather has served as a threat to our newly-renovated golf course.

At Spring meetings to consider the course reopening, the Greens Committee/GCROC, in conjunction with Course Superintendent Bob McCurdy and the Board of Governors, set forth to address potential weather threats with but one mandate: to protect the golf course at all costs. The new turf in our greens and tees, along with the fairways and rough surrounds, is very immature and susceptible to a number of potentials for stress failure. We gave Bob a strong level of authority to act and protect the golf course in this opening season in hopes of maximizing the performance potentials for the turfgrass in the years to come.

Today, after a 1" rain which began in the middle of the night and let up around 8am, we were forced to close the golf course again. The drainage system which was installed in 2001 and 2002 is designed to clear roughly 1" of rain in 4-6 hours. Had last evening's rain occurred earlier we would have been able to get the course readied for play this morning. The drainage system is functioning effectively and maximally; the timing and severity of the downpours have done a lot of the dictating; our grounds crew has worked tirelessly in every instance to get the course cleared of standing water and readied for play.

We will continue to act in a conservative manner in protecting the new turf on our golf course through the current golf season. As the turf matures, the potential exists to allow play after such torrential rains as we have seen this summer.

Thank you for your patience and it is our hope to keep as much play out on the course as Mother Nature will allow!

Sincerely,

Stephen G. Schafer,
President, Board of Governors

J. Clark Standish
GCROC Chairperson Robert McCurdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00929737975170922196noreply@blogger.com
